Gebel el-Silsila, Edfu: How to Visit and What to Do Nearby

Gebel el-Silsila is an ancient sandstone quarry and rock-cut shrine complex on both banks of the Nile, roughly 65 kilometers north of Aswan near the village of Edfu. Pharaohs from the 18th Dynasty onward extracted stone here for temples at Karnak and Luxor. The east bank holds over 30 rock-cut shrines and stelae carved into the cliff face, many dating to the reigns of Horemheb and Ramesses II. River cruise ships typically stop here between Edfu and Kom Ombo, and the site sees far fewer visitors than the main Luxor temples. If you're making a trip of it, consider other main attractions in Edfu, like El-Kab and Temple of Horus (at Edfu).
