Stonehenge, Salisbury: How to Visit and What to Do Nearby

 

Stonehenge stands on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, a ring of standing stones erected in stages between roughly 3000 BC and 2000 BC. The outer sarsen circle consists of stones averaging 4 meters tall and weighing roughly 25 tonnes each, brought from the Marlborough Downs 40 kilometers to the north. The smaller inner bluestones—each weighing up to 4 tonnes—were transported from the Preseli Hills in southwest Wales, roughly 240 kilometers away. The monument is aligned so that the sun rises directly over the Heel Stone on the summer solstice, visible from the center of the circle.
