Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka, Bhopal: How to Visit and What to Do Nearby

The Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka sit roughly 45 kilometers southeast of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, a complex of over 750 natural sandstone shelters containing some of the oldest known paintings on the Indian subcontinent. The earliest figures, estimated at 30,000 years old, depict hunting scenes, animals, dance, and daily life using red and white mineral pigments that have survived through protected overhang conditions. UNESCO inscribed the site in 2003. Approximately 15 shelters along a designated circuit are open to visitors, with admission running around 600 rupees for foreign visitors. When in Bhopal it's worth considering not only but another main attraction like Bharat Bhavan.
