Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai: How to Visit and What to Do Nearby

Meenakshi Amman Temple is a sprawling Hindu complex in the center of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi and her consort Sundareshwar. The temple's 14 gopurams—gateway towers ranging from 45 to 52 meters tall—are covered in thousands of brightly painted stucco figures of deities, mythical creatures, and demons. The complex covers roughly 6 hectares and includes the Thousand Pillar Hall, a Nayak-era structure with 985 carved granite columns. An estimated 15,000 visitors pass through the temple daily, and the evening closing ceremony, when Sundareshwar is ritually carried to Meenakshi's chamber, draws large crowds. If you're making a trip of it, consider other main attractions in Madurai, like Aayiram Kaal Mandapam and Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal.
