Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), Amalfi: How to Visit and What to Do Nearby

The Blue Grotto is a sea cave on the coast of Capri, accessible by small rowboat through a low entrance roughly 1 meter high. Inside, the cave extends roughly 60 meters, and sunlight entering through an underwater opening refracts through the water, illuminating the cavern in an intense electric blue. The cave was known to the Romans—remains of statues were recovered from the cave floor—but was brought to international attention in 1826 by German writer August Kopisch. Visits depend on sea conditions; the grotto is frequently closed during rough weather or high tide. is just one of many options in Amalfi. Major attractions worth considering include Amalfi Cathedral (Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea), Arsenale di Amalfi, and Faraglioni.
