Land of Frankincense, Salalah: How to Visit and What to Do Nearby

Land of Frankincense is a group of four UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Dhofar region of southern Oman, centered around Salalah. The sites include the ruins of Al-Baleed—an open-air museum with port foundations dating to the 4th century AD—and the frankincense groves of Wadi Dawkah, where roughly 5,000 Boswellia sacra trees still produce resin. The old caravan post of Shisr, identified with the legendary lost city of Ubar, lies about 180 kilometers north in the desert. The sites were inscribed in 2000 as evidence of a trade connecting Arabia to the Mediterranean for over 3,000 years. If you're making a trip of it, consider other main attractions in Salalah, like Dhofar and Taqah Castle.
