Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, Suwon: How to Visit and What to Do Nearby

 

Hwaseong Haenggung Palace sits at the center of Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress, roughly 30 kilometers south of Seoul. The palace complex dates to 1789, built by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty as a temporary residence during visits to his father's nearby tomb. The grounds include 576 rooms across multiple courtyards, a lotus pond, and the Bongsudang main hall where the king held official audiences. A traditional martial arts performance runs daily in the front courtyard, and the surrounding Hwaseong Fortress walls—a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997—extend 5.7 kilometers around the old town.
