Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Upper Peninsula: How to Visit and What to Do Nearby

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore runs 42 miles along Lake Superior's southern shore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, protecting sandstone cliffs rising up to 200 feet with mineral stains of iron, manganese, and copper that give the rock its banded color. The lakeshore was designated in 1966 as the first National Lakeshore in the United States. Boat cruises from Munising take 2 to 3 hours and cover roughly 37 miles of coastline for around $50 per adult. The Mosquito Beach Trail and Chapel Loop hikes reach cliff formations on foot from the Chapel Basin trailhead. If you're making a trip of it, consider other main attractions in Upper Peninsula, like Mackinac Bridge and Mackinac Island State Park.
