Mount Hood is a stratovolcano rising to 3,429 meters in the Cascade Range, roughly 80 kilometers east of Portland, Oregon. The mountain holds twelve named glaciers, and the Palmer Snowfield on the south face supports ski and snowboard training through the summer months—one of the few places in North America where summer skiing is possible. Timberline Lodge, a WPA-era stone-and-timber structure completed in 1937 at the 1,800-meter elevation, served as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film The Shining. is just one of many options in Portland.
