Things to Do in Catania, Italy

Catania sits on Sicily's east coast at the base of Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano at 3,329 meters. The city was destroyed by the 1693 earthquake and rebuilt with Baroque architecture in a geometric grid pattern on Via Etnea running straight uphill. Aci Castello, a beachside town 15 kilometers north, features a volcanic rock castle built in 1169 on a 25-meter basalt lava promontory overlooking the Ionian Sea.
